A Note From the Editor

This note was written on June 15, 2020 and published on June 16, 2020.

I’m tired.

I’m actually exhausted. WE are exhausted.

In the past two weeks, we’ve watched major corporations turn “Black Lives Matter” into a cheap marketing tactic. Cute social media graphics, general statements of solidarity, fake protest pictures… you name it. After the execution of Michael Brown, Black Lives Matter was taboo but now it seems to be a trend. What has changed? Why do they care now? Blackness in America is not a trend. It’s not aesthetically pleasing or easy to digest. This shit is heartbreaking.

The very same people who condemned Colin Kaepernick’s peaceful protest- are now urging the masses to “take a knee”. If it weren’t so tone deaf- it would be laughable.

The United States was built on the blood, sweat and tears of Black people. Generations later, and the livelihood of this country is still stained with the blood, sweat and tears of my people.

I’m tired.

But I persevere.

Her Modern Life will continue to be the digital destination for all things creative, engaging and informative. I’ve always aimed to create content that inspires- even when I feel like I have nothing to give. HML has been a ray of hope for me, and I pray that it has been the same for the person reading this note.
